The Newport News Tourism web site now includes two new embedded interactive GIS story maps to promote visitation to the City and the Hampton Roads Region: Bike Trails in Newport News, and Toast the Coast, a coastal Virginia guide to breweries, distilleries and wineries. Both map sites provide an attractive, interactive experience to the citizen that improves delivery of information and ease of use.

The Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department was revamping portions of its web site and requested two interactive maps from the GIS team, to enhance the user experience on the sites and provide detailed spatial information on two separate Tourism projects. The results were a cross department collaboration of the GIS and Tourisms teams.

The scope of project for each initiative included an interactive map with photos, detailed attributes and descriptive narratives, printable maps of the bike trails that could be downloaded by the user, and branding of both maps to correlate with the colors and icons already in use by Tourism. Accuracy of the bike trail locations and the Toast the Coast establishment locations was critical. Launch dates for the two web pages were May 1 for the Bike Trails and July 1 for Toast the Coast.

The business goals and objectives defined for the project were to enhance and increase tourism in the City of Newport News and the Hampton Roads Region through revamping two existing public-facing web pages to include interactive maps for the increased ease, understanding, and convenience of the user. It was also required that the maps include the branded look of the web site pages they would be embedded in for a cohesive presentation.
