As one of the largest service providers in Virginia government, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) continuously explores opportunities to improve service and overall efficiency. In January 2019, DMV introduced a new type of service aimed at significantly lowering customer service times in customer service centers (CSCs).

As the first in a series of future REAL ID transactions, DMV's REAL ID driver's license renewal service allows customers to start the transaction online, anywhere and at any time, and then receive expedited service at one of the agency's 75 CSCs or mobile offices, saving both the customer and the Commonwealth significant time and money.

With a service base of 5.9 million licensed drivers and 8.3 million registered vehicles, DMV operates one of the largest customer-facing agencies in Virginia government through its website, 75 CSCs and mobile offices. Serving on average 17,000 customers per day, every minute counts when it comes to ensuring the high level of expedient and accurate service Virginia's citizens expect.

By seamlessly joining together the online and physical service environments, DMV staff employed a service model that utilizes existing web and client .Net technologies to facilitate the secure and efficient handling of customer transaction data.
