Newborn Screening Timeliness Report Card

IT as Efficiency Driver - Government to Business

Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services
Linoise Edassery, Technical Project Manager

DCLS is responsible for screening each baby born in Virginia for certain rare but serious metabolic and genetic disorders. Timeliness of collecting the blood sample, testing and reporting results are key to success of this statewide program.

By developing the capability to automate the report card generation process as a function of the NBS Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) the creation of hospital report cards could be provided on a monthly basis, by email to multiple recipients within a hospital and provide more extensive information and graphics to assist hospitals in monitoring and improving their processes to better serve the newborns and families delivering in these facilities - and to potentially save the lives of those babies diagnosed with one of these serious disorders.

Virginia's Newborn Screening Program (NBS) is supported through a partnership between the Department of General Services/Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and the Virginia Department of Health/Division of Child and Family Health (VDH).
