To fill the needs of local employers seeking to hire more nurses, Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) is working to increase the number of highly prepared Registered Nurse (RNs) entering the workforce locally. PHCC's nursing program is among the most competitive programs of study offered by the college. Only qualified applicants are accepted into the program, as it is one of the most rigorous offered.

Despite the competitive entrance qualifications and high pass rate, PHCC has a relatively high attrition rate for students who enter the program and never make it to graduation or to sit for the licensure exam. Therefore, each cohort of graduates is composed of smaller numbers of RNs than PHCC could potentially be graduating each year.

New digital anatomy technology provides an Anatomy and Physiology simulator/virtual dissection in 3D environment, to aid in better preparing students for RN program gatekeeper courses including Biology, Anatomy and Physiology. The simulator table allows users to visualize in 3D real human anatomy exactly as they would on a fresh cadaver.

PHCC does not have the resources or capacity to bring in cadavers for dissection, so this technology provides an amazing opportunity for students to experience dissection as close to reality as possible. With the Anatomage Tables, individual structures are reconstructed in accurate 3D, resulting in an unprecedented level of real accurate anatomy, dissectible in 3D.

With the use of this advanced classroom equipment, students will be better prepared for the nursing entrance exam, with the intent of filling the nursing program with more highly prepared students, which will lead to increased retention and more program graduates.
