2018 Virginia Governor's Technology Awards winners, by category
Governor's Technology Awards in nine categories were presented to Virginia government entities which have innovatively improved government service delivery. State agencies, localities and education were named winners by a panel of Virginia government IT experts. Northam's Secretary of Administration Keyanna Conner and Chief Information Officer Nelson Moe gave trophies to winners at a special COVITS ceremony on Sept. 5, 2018. Several agencies under the Human Services portfolio needed a case management system that allowed for collaboration and data-sharing, all in the interest of innovative family-centered services. eAccess provides one-stop shopping that allows supervising authorities to manage employee access to court applications, accounts management, audit reporting and much more. It replaced an old legacy system that was manual, time-consuming and error-prone. It took a lot of collaboration to centralize everything. Congratulations to the Supreme Court!

This new system delivers an automated way to provide citizens with real-time claim entry and status updates. The online experience for citizens, contractors and staff has been exponentially improved, with 24/7 access and a long list of benefits. Congratulations to VDOT!

This new program provides a single state-wide solution that connects all hospital emergency departments while enabling real-time communication and collaboration among physicians and care providers. This not only leads to better care but far more efficient administration. Congratulations to VDH!

Let’s face it, FOIA requests can be a pain, but the new office has made it relatively painless with its new office that coordinates request-processing and tracking across the county. The process is now much faster, much cheaper and more accurate, which is adding to the county’s reputation for transparency. Congratulations to Fairfax County!
Government-to-Government
Project Description:
This new user-friendly app allows users to perform side-by-side comparisons of legislative drafts, bills and resolutions. It’s a groundbreaking system that has drawn national attention, including the 2018 National Conference of State Legislatures Innovation Award. One user was quoted as saying “This is life-changing!” Congratulations to DLAS!

Prior to this new system, the county’s personnel records were comprised of 1.4 million sheets of paper, and each one had to be retrieved manually. Not anymore! The new program has been a resounding success in terms of both labor efficiency and customer service. Congratulations to Albemarle County!

Data-sharing and resource-sharing are the keys to public safety, particularly in emergencies. The county’s new command center was built in-house by leveraging existing technologies and systems at minimal cost and maximum effect. Its successes have ranged from containing fires to rescuing lost hikers. Congratulations to Roanoke County!

This creative toolbar was developed in-house at a big savings. It provides quick access to documents and maps that would otherwise be difficult to locate. It is very popular, and its usage continues to increase as new mapping information is continually added. Congratulations to Warren County!

Undergraduates from diverse disciplines such as computer science, engineering, history, writing and even rhetoric worked together to make a golf cart drive completely on its own.

In our personal lives we use electronic signatures all the time to make online purchases, sign agreements and apply for credit and loans. Why not for official university documents and approvals? Well, VCU made it happen. In its first few months, nearly 16,000 electronic signatures were collected and the benefits have been tremendous.

To meet this challenge, they created an Information Security Office and launched a major initiative that encompasses all areas of security, including governance, awareness, monitoring, investigations, architecture and operations.

The Division of Capitol Police is the oldest police agency in the nation, and it just celebrated its 400th anniversary! To honor it, they partnered with DLAS to redesign their website. Since the launch, website traffic has increased by a remarkable 2,000%. Congratulations to DLAS and also to the Division of Capitol Police for four centuries of service!

The county puts a high priority on transparency, and this new portal is an example. Though the portal focuses on geographic and real estate information, the platform can be used for many other data types, paving the way to even better service and engagement.
